December 22, 2009—Representatives from the NAGE Charitable Foundation made an early morning visit to the Boston Teachers Union School today to present a $5,000 check to the new school. National President David J. Holway, NAGE Charities President Mary Sheehan, and NAGE Charities Treasurer John Mann interrupted a meeting of the student council to allow the students to participate in the presentation of the contribution. The group of respectful, professional council members are sixth graders at the school; NAGE Charities requested that they work together to decide how to spend $500 of the donation.
"Several weeks ago I was a "Principal for the Day" at the BTU School and was unbelievably impressed by the energy and dedication of the students, teachers and administration," said Holway. "So many great things are happening at the school and it was very exciting to be there.
"When I returned to NAGE and discussed the idea of having NAGE Charities "adopt" the school, there was no hesitation from the board. We're thrilled to be a part of what will undoubtedly be a huge success story."
In 2005, the Boston Teachers Union and the Boston School Committee negotiated an agreement under which the Boston Teachers Union would open a new, teacher-run school to showcase their commitment to educating Boston's children. Both the union and the Boston Public Schools are excited about this unprecedented partnership, and have been working hard to make it a reality. The school will showcase a world-class faculty, and unleash the knowledge and potential of teachers to teach a broad curriculum that meets the needs of all students.
The NAGE Charitable Foundation is a non-profit organization that was founded in February 2004 after a group of members met with National President David Holway to discuss ways the union could further serve our communities through charitable works.
"We are compelled by our mission statement to take a leadership role in creating a more just and humane society," said Holway. "It is in the spirit of giving back that we are now reaching beyond our everyday jobs to help children and families in need. In this way, our union is doing more than just 'talking the talk,' we're 'walking the walk' and helping people in the process."
Donations to operate the foundation come from member and local contributions, National Executive Board member contributions, NAGE staff payroll deductions, and numerous fundraisers held throughout the year.
Through these generous donations, the NAGE Charitable Foundation has contributed to dozens of organizations, including:
The foundation’s most significant commitment is major support of the annual UMass Memorial Cancer Center’s Walk to Cure Cancer. Sunday, September 13, 2009, will mark our sixth consecutive year participating as a signature sponsor of the Walk to Cure Cancer. We have had hundreds of members and NAGE staff participate in fundraising and the walk itself.
NAGE charities also raised money to help NAGE members in Louisiana and Mississippi who were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The foundation distributed close to $50,000 to 95 members on the Gulf Coast. The members and families we were able to help report that they were overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of their brothers and sisters in NAGE.
Although the foundation has been in operation for only a short time, we have been able to make an impact on the lives of our members, their families, and our communities.
Please join us in fulfilling our commitment to serve our communities throughout the country. Any contribution you are able to make can go a long way toward helping a brother or sister in need.
